Project Information

The existing bridge, located in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County, was originally built in 1928 and carries Route 40/Route 50 across the tidally influenced Great Egg Harbor River. Through a Concept Development Study, the NJDOT has determined that replacement of the structure is required. The Preliminary Preferred Alternative (PPA) is a single span concrete superstructure. The new bridge will have a span length of 73 and a half feet and will be constructed in the same general footprint as the existing structure. It will accommodate two 12-foot-wide through lanes, a 12-foot-wide right turn lane from Route 40/Route 50 onto River Drive, two 8-foot-wide shoulders, and one 6-foot-wide sidewalk. Additional improvements include new traffic signals and pedestrian crosswalks at the River Drive intersection, and geometric improvements for the right turn onto River Drive.

The new bridge will be constructed in four stages, with the eastbound and westbound through lanes maintained in each construction stage. A temporary bridge will be employed in Stages 2 and 3, situated north of the existing bridge, to maintain vehicular traffic. A temporary pedestrian bridge will be located south of the existing bridge to maintain pedestrian connectivity for the duration of the project.
