In response to the failure of a coal combustion impoundment in 2008 that sent coal ash slurry over 300 acres damaging property, water wells, and the neighboring ecosystem, the U.S. EPA Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery (ORCR) asked us to assess the integrity of impoundments at coal fired electric utilities. We have supported the ORCR in surveying impoundments across the nation to assess and rate their stability and hazard potential.
