Trenton Station Renovation

Transforming a 30-Year-Old Station
Trenton, New Jersey

Trenton Station was a 30-year-old intermodal transportation hub serviced by New Jersey Transit, AMTRAK, SEPTA, and various commuter bus lines. Train service from this location dates back to the mid-1800s. The building station sits at street level and the pedestrian concourse and overpass allow access to the tracks and platforms, which sit below at the base of a 20-foot retaining wall. The main station structure is adjacent to the southbound tracks, with a police substation, office, and retail space adjacent to the northbound tracks. The project's goal was to modernize the facility for its current use.

We provided structural, geotechnical, and civil engineering services for the renovation and reconstruction of the station. We performed structural inspection and design, geotechnical investigations, embankment stabilization, curtain wall design, a vehicular traffic study, and roadway widening. We also designed the parking facilities and completed stormwater management studies. Exterior work included improved traffic and vehicular circulation, a kiss-and-ride drop-off site, drainage and utilities, and landscape design. The new building structure is founded on a pile foundation, with a building superstructure of structural steel. It features an ellipsoid-shaped roof profile and exposed steel trusses, blending a classical approach to railroad architecture with a modern building form.
