The Cross Bay Bridge in Broad Channel, New York, is a critical passage to residential and beach areas in the Rockaways in Queens County and crosses a navigable channel in Jamaica Bay. To reduce future damage from road salt and windblown bay water, we specified concrete admixtures to inhibit corrosion and shrinkage in repair areas and a spray-applied waterproof membrane for the deck. When inspection revealed possible shear capacity deficiency, we designed an innovative system installing vertical steel strips to the outside face of girder webs. Despite these challenges, this $58.3 million project was delivered on-time and within three percent of the bid price.
