Caterpillar Visitors Center

Designing a Visitors Center to Provide a Hands-On Guest Experience
Peoria, Illinois

The Caterpillar Visitors Center tells the story of the world’s largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment — Caterpillar, Inc. Located in downtown Peoria, Illinois, the 50,000-square-foot facility houses numerous exhibits, a merchandise center, conference and dining areas, and a 70-seat theater located inside a life-size mining truck — the Cat 797 — standing at 24 feet tall and weighing 380 tons. Additional exhibits showcase the work that Caterpillar’s customers conduct globally. Visitors can see real tractors and machines, experience operating a D8 tractor from the 1930s, or sit in a 3D simulator of a bulldozer.

In addition to showcasing the company’s history and products to their global clients and the public, Caterpillar also performs community outreach events at the facility, including hosting schools throughout the year to promote practical uses of core math and science skills.

The visitors center, which achieved LEED Gold® certification, shares the seven-acre site with the Peoria Riverfront Museum, which was built simultaneously.

We provided architecture, interior design, structural engineering, technology (security, telecommunications, and audio/visual), and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering services.
