Lake Dam Road Bridge Replacement

Raleigh, North Carolina

Multi-faceted project reinvigorates Raleigh, North Carolina, recreational area

In 1966, a bridge was constructed on Lake Dam Road over Walnut Creek near the Lake Johnson dam. More than 50 years later in 2014, that bridge was deemed structurally deficient and was closed. We were hired by the city of Raleigh to complete the planning, survey, roadway design, structure design, permitting, and construction administration for the Lake Dam Road Bridge replacement. We conducted the environmental surveys, prepared the environmental document, and developed the bridge design per Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) guidelines. Additionally, we provided roadway design, hydraulic modeling, erosion control design, utility design and coordination, permitting, pavement markings, and signing plans, and evaluated the replacement of an existing 12-inch water main that included aerial bridge attachment or subaqueous installation via open-cut design.

Phasing utility construction presented a significant challenge for this bridge replacement project. New permanent utility easement was needed to accommodate the relocated gas, water, and overhead distribution lines. We worked with the city to secure a new single, permanent utility easement to contain all three utilities, streamlining easement acquisition efforts. In addition, we coordinated the schedule with the gas company to relocate the gas main during the same stream bypass operation that the contractor was using to relocate the water line. The utility relocation was completed without impacting the bridge demolition schedule, and we were able to limit stream bypass operations on the project.
