The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is committed to developing transportation improvements that best balance transportation needs, the environment, community concerns, and costs. NJDOT will hold a Virtual Public Information Center (PIC) to provide local residents, officials, and businesses with information on the Route 1&9 Bridge over NYS&W Railway project. You are encouraged to actively participate by providing comments by mail or email.

Due to the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, the Public Information Center will be held virtually. Please visit this website at a time that is convenient for you between September 19 and October 3, 2022. Comments will be accepted through October 10, 2022. Additional Details

Route 1&9 over NYS&W Railway Bridge Replacement project was initiated based on existing operational and safety problems on this section of Route 1&9. The limits of the proposed roadway improvements are south of Division Street to Fairview Avenue, approximately 2,800 linear feet from M.P. 60.58 to M.P. 61.10. Route 1&9 consists of four 10 foot through lanes, two in the northbound and two in the southbound direction. There are no shoulders present within the project limits. The bridge over the NYS&W Railway provided 19 foot vertical clearance over the inactive railroad and is in poor condition and needs replacement.

The Preliminary Preferred Alternative (PPA) recommends the bridge over the NYS&W Railway to be totally replaced with a new structure that provide 17.5 foot vertical clearance over the inactive railroad. The approach roadway will have a full depth pavement replacement and will be widened to 11 foot inner & 12 foot outer lane in each direction, with no shoulders. The roadway profile will be designed to meet the standard stopping sight distance. Horizontal curves will be flattened at the Fairview Cemetery and W. Prospect Ave. A left turn lane will be provided at the Private Road to the Waste Management facility and other industrial properties.
