During his initial time with Dewberry, Hlavacek led Dewberry’s Midwest public safety design studio and managed federal projects, including the General Emmett J. Bean Center, which featured the design of the largest rooftop photovoltaic array in the Midwest at the time. Prior to rejoining Dewberry, Hlavacek spent four years with HOK, where he played an integral role in the design of many large-scale public safety projects across the nation, including Alaska, Illinois, Michigan, and Tennessee.

“We are pleased to welcome Larry back to Dewberry,” says Dewberry Senior Principal and Director of Justice Architecture Jim Beight, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB. “Larry has always exhibited our cultural values and he brings a unique perspective to our design and leadership team.”

“Having spent much of my career at Dewberry, I am grateful to be joining the firm again,” says Hlavacek. “In all my work, I strive to provide transformative justice design that fosters restorative outcomes.”

Hlavacek earned a master’s degree (1992) and bachelor’s degree (1990) in architecture from the University of Illinois. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and contributes locally and nationally within the profession through written publications, blogs, and speaking engagements on public safety design.
