Dernev has over 25 years of experience in transportation engineering, spanning roles in signing and delineation, traffic management, transportation planning, and project management. He has a combined decade working at the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), where he conducted planning studies for both metropolitan and rural areas, served as a liaison between NCDOT and local planning committees, and analyzed transportation systems. Prior to joining Dewberry, Dernev worked as senior traffic engineer for an engineering, architectural, and environmental planning firm, where he conducted thorough intersection studies and performed quality control reviews that contributed to enhanced safety and efficiency in transportation projects. His ability to combine operational management and technical expertise to lead key project pursuits also helped to expand his previous firm’s design-build practice.

“Ivo brings a unique perspective to the North Carolina traffic team, which allows us to expand our traffic and transportation planning services,” says Dewberry Senior Associate and Regional Market Segment Leader Mike Surasky, PE, PTOE. “His regional expertise and ability to identify growth opportunities will be key to supporting our clients with an all-encompassing approach as our southeast transportation team continues to expand.”

Dernev has both a bachelor’s degree in transportation and highway engineering (1994) and a master’s degree in transportation and railroad design (1996) from the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy in Bulgaria. He is a member of the North Carolina Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (NCSITE).

Dewberry also announced that Todd Brooks, PE, has transitioned to the role of technical principal engineer in the firm’s North Carolina traffic group, where he will focus on technical operations and business development. With nearly 40 years of experience in transportation engineering, including seven years with Dewberry’s southeast transportation team, Brooks’ expertise includes traffic signal design, signal systems, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), signing, pavement marking, and work zone traffic control. Brooks earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from North Carolina State University (1986). He is actively involved in the North Carolina Section and Southern District of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (SDITE), where he leads the NCSITE mentoring and SDITE development committees.
