The Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation (SBIDC) is hosting a free small business storm preparedness workshop run by Dewberry at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, 72 Bowne Street, Brooklyn New York on September 17, 2013 – 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Participants will:

  • Receive a ready to use customizable Small Business Preparedness Plan model
  • Learn about storm hazards and mitigation methods to lesson flood damage
  • Coordinate with other local businesses to strengthen Southwest Brooklyn resiliency

Studies indicate that forty percent of small businesses impacted by disasters never recover. Businesses that use their disaster preparedness plan typically have less severe storm damages. As Brooklyn approaches the one year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, many are not as prepared as they could be for future weather events. SBIDC brought Dewberry's engineering expertise to Southwest Brooklyn to give small businesses access to the tools needed to plan and prepare for storms. Methods to prevent flood damage from future severe storms will be presented. Finally, participants will be coached through making their own Storm Preparedness Plan.

Completing the Small Business Storm Preparedness Plan model will give businesses a framework for disaster preparation and immediate recovery during adverse conditions. A Small Business Storm Preparedness Plan supports:

  • Continued essential functions/operations during an emergency
  • Reduced business disruptions
  • Timely and orderly recovery from an emergency
