The University of North Florida (UNF) in Jacksonville has experienced a significant increase in the popularity of its fitness and recreation programs since the opening of its new Student Wellness Complex in the fall of 2012. The three-story, $19.5-million facility, which is set across the street from the Student Union and adjacent to the UNF Arena and Aquatic Center, completes a planned campus hub for student activity. Use of the facility has increased from approximately 13,000 per month at the previous building to nearly 30,000 per month.

Working in joint venture with Orlando-based Borrelli + Partners, Dewberry provided architectural design and interior design for the project. The 76,500-square-foot facility represents the first of two phases of construction for the wellness center. The building currently offers a 32-foot climbing wall, known as the "Osprey Cliff," in the entry area; three indoor group fitness rooms and one outdoor multi-use balcony group fitness space that together accommodate up to 50 classes per week; 27,000 square feet of fitness space; and a 1/8-mile, three-lane rubber track. The building also houses a fitness and nutrition assessment center, locker rooms, offices, and a juice bar.

The building is designed to LEED® Silver certification standards. The second phase of construction will add a three-court gymnasium and physical education teaching areas.
