Dewberry, a leading professional services firm, announces the election of Barry K. Dewberry to the position of chairman of the board, effective April 13, 2012. Sidney O. Dewberry, outgoing chairman, will transition into the role of chairman emeritus and founder.

Barry Dewberry has most recently served as vice chairman. Sid Dewberry will continue to serve on the Dewberry Board of Directors, providing strategic guidance to Dewberry's chairman and officers.

About Barry K. Dewberry

After joining the firm in 1975, Barry Dewberry began taking on key roles in the organization's management in 1977. He has held the positions of chief operating officer and chief executive officer. During his 37-year tenure with the company, he has continuously championed aggressive growth, diversification, and geographic expansion of the firm, advances in technologies, and educational opportunities for employees.

Barry Dewberry holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee and master's degree from American University. In addition to his responsibilities to the Dewberry organization, he has served on many public and private organization boards, including First Union Bank Advisory Board; Fairfax Symphony Board of Directors; Fairfax County School Superintendent's Council; Northern Virginia Community College President's Advisory Board; Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; and Advisory Board to the Superintendent of the District of Columbia Public Schools.

About Sidney O. Dewberry

Sid Dewberry has overseen the operations and growth of Dewberry since he co-founded the firm in 1956. As chairman of the board, he was involved in the management of the organization, while also devoting much of his time to advancing the practice of the planning, engineering, and surveying professions. He is actively involved in a number of civic, charitable, and academic endeavors and is widely known as an industry leader in the greater Washington metropolitan area.

Long recognized for his commitment to professional leadership and education, Sid Dewberry is a founding member and former chairman of the highly acclaimed Engineers & Surveyors Institute. He is also a founding member of the George Mason University Urban Systems Engineering Institute, now known as the Civil Engineering Institute. His commitment to higher education is also reflected in his position as Rector Emeritus of the George Mason University Board of Visitors and his past appointment to the Governor's Commission for the Future of Higher Education in Virginia. Sid Dewberry is a member of the Virginia Business-Higher Education Council and previously served as a Trustee of the George Mason University Foundation.

Sid Dewberry holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from George Washington University, where he was inducted into the university's School of Engineering Hall of Fame in 2009. He is the recipient of the Virginia Economic Bridge Initiative's Leadership Award, the Captain of Industry Award from the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, the Founders Award from the Northern Virginia Community Foundation, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from George Washington University. He was named "Northern Virginian of the Year" by New Dominion magazine and honored as a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He considers one of his highest achievements to be a recipient of the George Mason University Mason Medal.
