Dewberry Chairman Sidney O. Dewberry, PE, LS, has announced that Donald E. Stone, Jr., PE, an engineer with nearly 30 years' experience, will serve as the firm's next chief executive officer. Stone, Dewberry's current chief operating officer, will assume his new responsibilities on April 2, 2010. The chairman also announced that Dan M. Pleasant, PE, president of Dewberry's southeast division, has been chosen as the new chief operating officer.
Stone will succeed Ronald L. Ewing, PE, RLS, a highly respected engineer who has been with Dewberry since 2002, when he was brought on board as chief operating officer. Prior to joining Dewberry, Ewing was a regional general manager for a large international firm and was responsible for a staff of over 1,100 with gross revenue of $140 million. He has participated in the due diligence, acquisition, and integration of several firms.
For much of his 40-plus years in the industry, Ewing has also planned, engineered, and managed transportation, aviation, water resources, and major public works projects throughout the United States. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers; he is past chair of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Professional Development Committee, served on the executive committee, and is presently a fellow, the ACEC Management Practice Committee Chair, and ACEC Liaison to the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. Ewing is also past chairman of the Civil Engineering Institute of George Mason University.
In addition to ensuring a smooth transition for Stone and Pleasant into their new roles, Ewing may continue to be involved with Dewberry on various initiatives. Ewing also plans to retire and move to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
About Donald E. Stone, Jr., PE
Stone joined Dewberry in December 2008 and has been serving as Dewberry's COO and infrastructure engineering services practice area leader. He came to Dewberry from O'Brien & Gere, where he held several corporate leadership positions.
Stone graduated from The Citadel, Charleston, South Carolina, with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. He is a water/wastewater engineer with technical expertise in design-build programs and industrial, municipal, and federal project development and execution. He is a registered professional engineer in multiple states, certified by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, and a member of the Society of American Military Engineers.
About Dan M. Pleasant, PE
Pleasant is the president of Dewberry's southeast division. He directs a multi-disciplined staff of 175 in five office locations in Virginia and North Carolina with annual revenues in excess of $30 million. He has spent 30 years of his 35-year career with Dewberry. Under his direction, the division has successfully completed numerous complex design assignments requiring the coordination effort of a multi-disciplined team of professionals. Such assignments include regional water and wastewater infrastructure projects, major solid waste management/disposal facilities, and multi-million dollar building projects including educational facilities, laboratories, and institutional facilities. Pleasant has also managed the acquisition of three companies for Dewberry and the initiation of Dewberry's new process engineering and technology practice housed in Raleigh.
Pleasant is a graduate of North Carolina State University, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering. He is a registered professional engineer in multiple states and also certified by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering. He is a member of multiple professional associations to include the American Water Works Association, Water Environment Federation, and American Council of Engineering Companies, and is active in regional community and civic organizations. He recently was appointed for a six-year term to the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.
