Creating a More Resilient City

In the Hampton Roads region, the rate of relative sea level rise (SLR) is within the top 10 percent of the nation. We are completing a comprehensive SLR and recurrent flooding analysis and planning study that will help prepare the Virginia Beach for anticipated increases in flood impacts due to SLR. The city is updating its stormwater master plan concurrently, creating a unique opportunity to collaborate to assess how the increased coastal flood elevations will backflow through the stormwater system and cause additional interior flooding.

Our study will complete a comprehensive vulnerability assessment, which will be used for short- and long-term flood risk reduction measures across the city’s four unique watersheds. Each watershed will receive a tailored adaptation plan incorporating adaptation strategies, encompassing planning, policy, and engineering solutions. Prioritized implementation roadmaps will be established through a ranking framework including feasibility and benefit-cost analysis metrics.
