Suncoast Parkway 2, Section 2

Designing Over Challenging Barriers
Hernando and Citrus Counties, Florida

Twenty-six miles through Hernando and Citrus Counties, Florida, from U.S. 98 to U.S. 19 lies the Suncoast Parkway 2 project, a new alignment extension of Suncoast Parkway 1. Section 2 was eight miles and includes a number of challenging project barriers; varying topography, elevation changes, and a few miles of state-owned land.

To overcome those obstacles, we produced extremely detailed designs and right-of-way maps. We designed the project’s seven bridge locations and diamond interchange with unique vertical profiles to blend in with the 70-foot elevation changes along the corridor (normally unheard of in Florida). Our developed geometry kept with the existing flow of the terrain, and included pre-treating roadway runoff through the state-owned lands, thereby eliminating the need for off-site stormwater management ponds.

Bowyer-Singleton & Associates, Inc., acquired by Dewberry in 2013, performed this work.
