Assessing and Documenting a mid-19th Century Sailing Vessel

A mid-19th century sailing vessel was discovered during steel wall installation.

We used a laser scanner to capture and record coordinate data of each visible surface, obtaining each angle of the object.

When contractors discovered historic vessel remains while driving sheet piles for a coastal protection project, we helped locate the extent of the remains through consultation with the Federal Highway Administration, the New Jersey Department of Transportation, and the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office, and verified proper treatment under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Archaeological work included extensive historic documentary research, field documentation, assessment of timbers and materials unearthed from the site, and field oversight of geoprobing and construction activities to establish the full spatial extent of the wrecked ship.

Our survey team captured scan data for the vessel using a Leica ScanStation P40, which covered each angle of the object. In post processing, we pieced the scans together to create an accurate 3D point cloud representation, and then used a 3D printer to replicate the vessel remains. We determined that no further impact of historical remains would occur and that the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Coastal Engineering could move forward with its project.
