The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the design-build team of Shirley Contracting Company, LLC, and Dewberry recently celebrated the completion of I-64 Segment I, which widened approximately five miles of the heavily used interstate highway from four to six lanes. This is the 14th design-build project that the Shirley/Dewberry team has completed for VDOT.
The widening began just west of the Lee Hall Reservoir and continued to just west of the Jefferson Avenue Interchange. Additionally, the auxiliary lanes at the Fort Eustis Boulevard interchange were lengthened to increase capacity and improve safety. Four existing bridges on I-64 were widened over the Lee Hall Reservoir and at Fort Eustis Boulevard, and the two existing bridges over Industrial Park Drive and CSX Railroad were replaced. Additional project elements included approximately 12,500 linear feet of noise barriers, stormwater management facilities, drainage improvements, geotechnical ground improvements, concrete pavement patching and repair, and asphalt pavement overlay.
