Restoring a Historic Navy Boathouse

We expanded and replaced the crumpling dock, allowing crew boats to land, and be cleaned and stored more efficiently.

Interior and exterior renovations were completed without disrupting the crew teams’ use of the LEED® Silver facility.

The new state-of-the-art tank facility accommodates 16-20 athletes at a time, with rowing at speeds close to six meters per second, enabling the oarsmen to receive better sport-specific training during winter months.

To comply with environmental permitting requirements through the MDE, and the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Commission, we accelerated our site design process, allowing time for review while meeting the Naval Academy’s deadlines.

First constructed in 1930, Hubbard Hall housed the U.S. Navy's 40-member crew team. The Navy has since added two more crew teams, and expanded Hubbard Hall's use. As lead designer on the design-build project with Forrester Construction Co., we provided survey, civil, and structural engineering services to deliver a completely renovated facility. Upgrades included a renovated and expanded dock for the crew teams, updated parking lot lighting and layout, replacement of an aging HVAC system, and additional geothermal heating to support a more energy-efficient building.
