Upgrading an Existing Cancer Clinic to Add Privacy, Increase Capacity, and Enhance Accessibility
Baytown, Texas

The primary goals for the Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital Cancer Center project included increasing privacy and space for patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment and designing lab space to be compliant with the pending U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) Convention’s Chapter 800 standards.

Our client recognized the risk imposed on staff preparing the hazardous drugs needed for chemotherapy and asked for our design help to improve safety. We added a safety lab for mixing treatments which will also help the facility comply with the pending USP 800 standard.

To accomplish the goal of increasing patient privacy, we subdivided the infusion treatment area into eight enclosed individual treatment spaces with sliding glass doors that allow visibility to staff and four curtained spaces. We integrated nurse call buttons at each treatment seat and individual televisions for patients’ enjoyment.

We increased capacity for patient flow by incorporating two dressing rooms and sub-waiting areas where patients can prepare themselves for radiation therapy while other patients are being treated. These small tweaks to the plan allow staff to treat patients in faster succession while improving the overall patient satisfaction by keeping the patient moving through the process.

An interesting challenge during the design phase was to integrate separate suites into an efficiently functioning single suite around existing structural elements. The building has an irregular plan and was originally designed as three suites separated by hidden structural braces for the gable roof and fire-rated partitions. By removing barriers dividing previously separated suites, we were able to establish a common reception and waiting room. Additionally, we implemented contemporary finishes and fixtures to provide the patients and guests with a calming and comfortable space upon arrival and in the waiting space.
