Surveying Across Difficult Terrain

66%

increased user capacity

Dominion Power's number 551 transmission line, originally completed in the late 1960s, runs across 100 miles of various terrain from the Mt. Storm substation in West Virginia, to the Doubs substation in Maryland. This 45-year-old line - the first 500 kV line energized in the U.S. - was heavily loaded, and much of its equipment was nearing the end of its useful life. Dominion tasked us with completing the surveying stakeouts under an aggressive schedule. The refurbished line will operate with an increased user capacity of 66%, making more power available to significant portions of the population.
