Western Loudoun Sheriff’s Station

A Sustainably Designed Police Facility to Support the Rural Extents of Loudoun County
Round Hill, Virginia

The 8,700-square-foot Western Loudoun Sheriff’s Station, located just outside of downtown Round Hill, Virginia, is the first free-standing facility built specifically to support the sheriff’s office operations in the western portion of Loudoun County. The county continues to be one of the fastest growing counties in Virginia, however, its western extent has yet to be drastically affected by suburban sprawl and is still largely rural farmlands. We designed the facility to reflect this rural setting.

30%

reduction in building's water usage

75%

of occupied building spaces have access to natural daylight

The Western Loudoun Sheriff’s Station will help the sheriff’s office support patrols, investigations, crime prevention, and community policing activities. Community outreach and interface has become increasingly important to the sheriff’s office. To accommodate this project focus, we designed the new station to include a large community room available for public meetings as well as training sessions.

Sustainable features include geothermal heat pumps for the mechanical system and significant water reduction strategies. Low-flow fixtures were used to reduce the building’s water use by more than 30 percent. Additionally, the landscaping was designed to require no irrigation. More than 75 percent of the occupied spaces in the building have access to natural daylight. The site design maximizes open space on the site and features an effective stormwater management plan that incorporates the county’s best management practices so peak loads do not exceed pre-development peak discharge rate and quantity.

Our services for the project included architecture, interior design, site/civil engineering, surveying, security/technology design, construction administration, stormwater engineering, and structural engineering.
