Travilah Fire Station #32

Designing to Minimize Fire Fighter Response Times
Rockville, Maryland

The design for the Travilah Fire Station #32 in Rockville, Maryland—a four-bay, 26,554-square-foot fire station with a battalion command suite—required blending commercial, residential, and vehicular apparatus spaces into a functional facility to help minimize firefighter response times. The interior spaces were arranged to provide a functional and efficient layout with appropriate space adjacencies to promote a safe and comfortable living and working environment.

The sleeping rooms were segregated from the apparatus bays and day spaces to minimize noise intrusion from the daytime living and working areas. Similarly, the lounge is separated from the other daytime spaces to minimize noise transference both in and out of the space, as well as to allow for light control when viewing the televisions. On the other hand, the kitchen and dining spaces open into each other for ease of circulation and flow, providing a social atmosphere. The living quarters for the fire fighters was designed to respect the residential nature of the facility, while at the same time recognizing the need for functional durable finishes that will hold up to the high traffic in the station over time.

The final design resulted in a high-performing, LEED® Silver fire station with a strong civic image that will set the tone for development in the future.
