Sutphin Road Gravity Sewer Interceptor Upgrade

Strategically Rerouting Wastewater

The existing Sutphin Road interceptor (pictured above) is undersized and will be upgraded to handle additional flows and accommodate for future growth.

The design includes 10 creek crossings and approximately one mile of reroute to relocate the sewer out of Norfolk Southern railway’s right-of-way and to provide reliable easement access for maintenance.

We worked with Froehling & Robertson, Inc. to perform the geotechnical bores, which identified subsurface materials and rock that are present along the existing sewer line.

The Halifax County Service Authority (HCSA) needed a solution that would allow them to decommission the Town of Halifax Cowford Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and transport the wastewater to HCSA’s regional WWTP on Maple Avenue. After preparing a preliminary engineering study, we developed a design that, once implemented, will route the wastewater via the Sutphin Road gravity sewer interceptor to the plant on Maple Avenue. Currently, we are designing the replacement of roughly 12,000 linear feet of 12- and 15-inch failing vitrified clay pipe with new 16- and 18-inch polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and ductile iron pipe. In order to help Halifax County Service Authority attain funding for this project, we helped apply for a grant through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development funding program. Our proposal was the first to be submitted and accepted through the program’s new online application system.
