Using LiDAR to map the vegetation, line sag and temperature is extremely accurate, and is compiled of nearly 20 to 30 measurements per square meter.

Preventing Outages Through Surveying

Throughout the United States, vegetation growth is the leading contributor of power outages – particularly during storms. The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) states that transmission line owners need to identify vegetation clearance, transmission line voltage, conductor sag and the effects of wind velocities in order to proactively reduce power outage risks.

We are currently working with a Mid-Atlantic electric utility, providing independent quality assurance and control of LiDAR needed to comply with NERC’s vegetation management program. By using such high-resolution data, our power transmission clients can reduce the risks of power outages to residents across their entire service area caused by unruly vegetation growth.
