The west-facing curtainwall incorporates high performance glazing with an automated window shading system. Public parking is located directly across the street in a new downtown square.

Solar and wind power provide green power equal to 70 percent of the predicted annual electrical consumption over a two-year period. The roofing materials meet Solar Reflectance Index requirements to avoid contributing to heat island effect.

Two cooling towers are located on the roof—one provides cooling for the historical courthouse through underground pipes. This innovative approach preserved the appearance of the historic courthouse square.

Energy savings of 36 percent was achieved through high-efficiency glazing, reduced interior lighting, occupancy sensors, efficient HVAC system, demand control ventilation, efficient chiller and boiler, and advanced building automation systems.

Twelve percent of the building materials were manufactured using recycled materials, while 17 percent were manufactured within 500 miles of the project site. Ninety percent of on-site generated construction waste was diverted from the landfill.

Low-emitting adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings, carpet systems, composite wood, and agrifiber materials were used to reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are potentially harmful to the comfort and well-being of the occupants.

Thermal control is provided for individual occupants or specific groups in multi-occupant spaces to promote their productivity, comfort, and well-being.

The new Law and Justice Center consolidates all of Livingston County's court-related departments, previously located in various downtown locations, into one facility. The 62,870-square-foot, three-story facility includes courtrooms and related support spaces, offices, meeting spaces, storage, a sally port, and detention areas. Built on a former brownfield site, design of the new facility includes room for expansion up to 21,400 square feet. The roof is designed for 66 future photovoltaic panels that will provide three percent of the predicted annual electrical consumption. Additionally, we updated the historic 1875 courthouse for all non-court related activities.
