Transforming an Aging Elementary School into a Vibrant Community Center

Since reopening, the Lincoln Center has seen increased community participation in all programs, and a 50 percent annual revenue increase from the prior five-year average.

Participation of dance and fitness classes increased by 21 percent during the facility’s first year of operation.

Alex Brown, superintendent, says, “We knew this building was in dire need of reconstruction, remodeling, or a combination of the two. We were unsure of where to start, and Dewberry guided us from beginning to end.”

We involved the community—gaining public input through focus groups, a community survey, and an open house—early in the process to aid in the development of a community-based facility master plan.

The phased master plan allowed for minimal disruption of services during the demolition and construction phases of the improvement project.

By incorporating green building materials, an improved mechanical system, and increased daylighting, we provided a healthier indoor environment for patrons and staff.

The Lincoln Center is a family-friendly destination with new space that centralizes daycare and other children's activities.

The Highland Parks and Recreation Department acquired and remodeled the Lincoln Center in 1982, then added a 38,000-square-foot field house in 1997. In order to transform the aging 1945 former elementary school into a vibrant community center, we demolished 35,105 square feet, constructed a 35,559-square-foot addition, and remodeled 49,965 square feet.

The Lincoln Center is now a family-friendly destination with new programs; expanded and improved services; and increased rental space, multipurpose space, and storage. An improved parking and entry sequence promotes safety and now provides convenient access to all areas of the facility. The new community center has reinforced a sense of community pride and strength within the neighborhood.
