Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery Program Amsterdam Standby Generators

Meeting Future Emergency Needs Without Delay
Amsterdam, New York

Rising sea levels and extreme weather events with Hurricanes Irene and Sandy caused major flooding that interrupted power and emergency services throughout the city and town of Amsterdam, New York, which resulted in the closure of critical government operations for several days after the storms.

facilities

We provided project management, engineering design, and construction support services for standby generators and fuel systems at six critical facilities throughout the city and town. The innovative design solutions for the standby generators and fuel system included onsite diesel fuel storage tanks and natural gas supply connections. During the power outage, the generators start automatically and provide power to the facilities through automatic transfer switches.

The generators installed in the Amsterdam City Hall, the Department of Public Works building, and Amsterdam Town Hall will allow these critical buildings to remain operational if utility power is not available. The newly installed generators in Amsterdam High School, the Wilbur Lynch Literacy Academy, and William H. Barkley Elementary School allow these locations to operate as emergency shelters for the community.
