Evaluating Industry-Specific Climate Risk to Inform Technical Professionals

We led a multi-disciplinary team of climate scientists, coastal hazard experts, risk assessment specialists, and seasoned airport managers, designers, and planners to develop a digital risk assessment tool and guidebook to help airport managers understand how climate change will impact their specific assets and operations, and how adaptation actions can be incorporated into planning processes.

Developed in consultation with several major U.S. airports—including Dallas/Fort Worth, JFK, Phoenix Sky Harbor, and Boston Logan—our desktop-based tool, Airport Climate Risk Operation Screening (ACROS), streamlines the climate risk screening process for an entire airport. ACROS contains climate information for more than 500 U.S. airports and impact estimates for more than 700 climate change-related hazards, which are used to compute estimated levels of risk for assets and operations over short- and long-term planning horizons. Risk rankings and groups can then be used to support the adaptation planning process by providing insights into higher urgency risks.

With these tools, airport planners and managers can easily assess and understand which aspects of climate can influence airport operations, what types of impacts to expect based on their own vulnerabilities, and how to use adaptation strategies to efficiently build their airports' overall climate resilience. The ACROS tool and guidebook are both available on the Transportation Research Board’s website
