Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center, Inpatient Tower Expansion

Expanding Patient Care Excellence
Zion, Illinois

We have been working with Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern) for more than five years to provide architectural and engineering services campus-wide. Since developing a campus master plan, we have designed expansion projects that have increased the hospital square footage by 78-percent to more than 460,000 square feet in addition to working on numerous interior renovation projects.

Completed in November 2015, the Inpatient Tower Expansion includes six floors plus a basement, totaling approximately 168,000 square feet. The addition houses a new main entrance to the hospital, which includes a two-story, open-design main lobby and connections to the existing hospital. The new wing has a culinary department with a servery, kitchen, demonstration kitchen, and 250-seat dining room with views into a new and extensively landscaped courtyard; three inpatient floors with 72 rooms for oncology, surgical, ICU, and stem cell patients; and 48 guest rooms, opening in mid-2016, for outpatients and family members. All 72 private inpatient rooms are designed with plenty of space for family members to stay. Nursing stations are decentralized to minimize steps for staff and maximize patient care at the bedside. The typical patient room is the result of extensive patient and provider input; full-scale mockups of the rooms were built on-site prior to construction. Although room types are designated by floor, the second floor and stem cell unit are ICU-capable to minimize the need to move patients if their acuity level changes. Ancillary spaces include a gift shop, spa, salon, and courtyard as well as a variety of relaxation areas for hospital-wide outpatients’ and family members’ use between appointments. Renewal rooms, where CTCA at Midwestern nurses can go for a few moments of self-reflection, are also found on each of the patient care floors.
