All U.K. Government Projects to use BIM within Five Years

The U.K. government has announced that as of 2016, Building Information Modeling (BIM) will be required for all public sector construction projects. In support of this effort, a user group has been formed and an implementation plan has been developed to drive the adoption of BIM across government agencies.

As part of the government’s construction strategy, released in May, standards for the BIM initiative will be coordinated through the Cabinet Office. The plan will include mandated yearly milestones to show measurable progress.

Additionally, a separate group has been formed with the goal of collaborating with software vendors to develop tools that will enable organizations to easily adopt BIM technologies—moving forward the idea of a national BIM library.

As technology improves and proven BIM processes are developed, governments are realizing the benefits of utilizing the virtual environment. As an industry in the U.S.,we need to be ready for it!

At Dewberry, we have worked hard to make sure our BIM implementation is on the cutting edge, creating processes, standards, and good management practices that comply with governmental standards. As teams push through the learning curve of BIM and start to understand new technology associated with this, Dewberry will be well prepared for the requirements pushed forth by our clients.
