Improvements Will Expand Capacity in Courthouse Road Area.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) opened a new diverging diamond interchange over Interstate 95 at Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) in Stafford County, Virginia, on December 7. Designed and constructed by the design-build team of Dewberry and Shirley Contracting Company, the interchange represents a milestone in VDOT’s $195 million project to expand capacity and improve travel in Stafford County’s Courthouse Road area.

A diverging diamond interchange sends traffic to the opposite side of the road through the interchange so vehicles can move directly onto the interchange ramps, eliminating conflict points associated with conventional left turn movements. This is the fifth diverging diamond interchange that VDOT has opened in the state.

Work completed also includes more than two miles of widening of Courthouse Road west of I-95, and realignment of nearly one mile of Courthouse Road/Hospital Center Boulevard east of I-95. The entire Courthouse Road area improvement project, which has involved extensive community engagement, is set to be complete in July 2020.
