U.S. Army Lt. Col. Cullen Jones, PE, PMP, LEED Green Associate, ENV SP, a Training with Industry (TWI) fellow with Dewberry, has been promoted from Major to Lieutenant Colonel by the U.S. Army. Jones also received the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Washington, D.C. Post’s Outstanding Contributions by Young Military Member Award and its nomination for SAME's national Sverdrup Medal.

Jones was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on February 6, 2016, at the Fort Belvoir Officer’s Club. TWI sponsor Maj. Gen. Michael Walsh (Ret.), Dewberry’s director of water resources and coastal resiliency, presided over Jones’ promotion ceremony. In attendance were Dewberry CEO Donald E. Stone, Jr., PE; Dewberry Vice President and fellow TWI sponsor Col. Grant Smith (Ret.), PE, PMP, CFM; Jones’ family; and colleagues from his past 16 years of service in the U.S. Army.

Jones was also honored with SAME Washington, D.C. Post's Outstanding Contributions by Young Military Member plaque on January 14, 2016, at the National Press Club during its 20th Annual Awards Luncheon. Dewberry Vice President and Principal Neal T. Wright, PE, PMP, F.SAME, F.ASCE, F.NSPE, nominated Jones for the award, stating that, “Maj. Cullen Jones’ contributions to our nation, his community, and the engineering profession exemplify the personal and professional qualities the Society of American Military Engineers seeks to inspire in our young members.”

Jones received the award for his leadership, professionalism, and outstanding contribution to engineering over the past three-years. Examples of Jones’ accolades include increasing counter-IED training within the 2nd Brigade 101st Airborne Division resulting in no dismounted IED fatalities during the brigade’s Operation Enduring Freedom XV deployment, developing and overseeing the establishment of the Afghan National Police C-IED Explosives Hazard Reduction course in the North-of-Kabul region, serving as officer-in-charge of the award-winning U.S. Military Academy student chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 1st Regional Division in 2013, receiving the U.S. Army Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal in 2013 for his numerous contributions to STEM outreach, and contributing to engineering academic excellence in his graduate school research.

The SAME Washington, D.C. Post has also nominated Jones for SAME's Sverdrup Medal, named in honor of U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Leif J. Sverdrup and first awarded in 1980. The Sverdrup Medal is a national award given to uniformed members of SAME who are 39 years old or younger and have demonstrated leadership in managing projects or organizations; received awards or other recognition for professionalism; and who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to engineering, design, construction, research and development, or planning in the past three-years. Jones will be considered for the Sverdrup Medal among other outstanding young military members nominated by SAME posts across the nation.

Currently, Jones is working with Dewberry as part of the U.S. Army’s Engineer Regiment TWI rotational program in which he is gaining a broader understanding of how the architecture, engineering, and consulting industry operates over a one-year period while remaining on active duty.
