Gabrielle Czernik, a structural designer from Dewberry's Bloomfield, New Jersey, office, was named Young Civil Engineer of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) North Jersey Branch. The award is presented to a civil engineer who has significantly contributed to the civil engineering profession. Czernik was recognized in part for her work on behalf of the Younger Member Group (YMG) committee. The YMG is a group for members under the age of 35 that fosters professional development, encourages networking, and hosts social events. She has been an active member of the group for three years and formerly served as president.

With the goal of building stronger relationships with local educational institutions, the YMG partners with students at the college and K-12 level. Czernik currently serves as a practitioner advisor for students at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, and organizes events, activities, and sponsorships to promote National Engineers Week in February.

The award was given during the September 18, 2014 ASCE North Jersey Branch Awards event. Other honors included New Jersey Turnpike Authority's John Withers, PE, as Civil Engineer of the Year; Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's Csaba Kertesz, PE, as Government Engineer of the Year; North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority's Mary K. Murphy with the Service to the People award; and Valley Middle School's Judith Vihonski as Educator of the Year.
